This concentration is designed for students interested in pursuing a business venture or managing an entrepreneurial enterprise. Graduates will be exposed to practical application of business theory in marketing, management, finance, and the online experience involved with running a business. Developed to provide specialized knowledge for those interested in entrepreneurship, this program will expose students to key concepts and faculty members that will help to lend direction to their entrepreneurial plans.

Objectives:

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:

  • Design marketing strategies to effectively target the needs of current and future customers.
  • Develop mission statements, vision statements, and business strategies to obtain and sustain various marketing segments to increase growth potential.
  • Use analytical financial tools to conduct business analysis and to communicate reasoning for business decisions.

The course emphasizes the most successful methods from business statistics, production and operations management, management science, and operations research fields of study. Students will be required to synthesize material from several major fields of study in order to apply it in this course. The capabilities of Microsoft Office® will be used extensively throughout the course to illustrate the application of these methods and techniques to the analysis and solution of modern business problems. Every business benefits from a business plan. This class helps students understand that a business plan is more than a strategic plan. The motives for a business plan are largely the same for every business: to have an intent, purpose, and direction for the business. This course deals with the critical decisions and action steps entrepreneurs must make in both planning and executing a new venture. Entrepreneurs share many of the same traits as the brave men and women who serve in the military. Running your own company requires discipline, courage, and incredible vigor. Also, entrepreneurs must be confident in their decision-making skills. Consequently, students with military experience may be especially well-suited to the demands of business ownership.

Being an entrepreneur requires creative problem-solving skills and a passion for generating measurable business growth. In fact, these traits describe virtually all successful business leaders, including intrapreneurs. 

The term “intrapreneur” is an informal name that refers to an innovative self-starter who is not a business owner. Intrapreneurs are influential team members and key players in corporate innovation. They may be instrumental in developing new products and services or updating business practices for their employers. Being an intrapreneur can provide a similar experience to that of an entrepreneur with significantly fewer risks.

Entrepreneurship Faculty Spotlight

Professor Abdel-Kader Ben-Mohamed is an accomplished business leader. His decades-long career includes roles with some of the largest institutions in America, including Citigroup and Wells Fargo. In addition, Dr. Ben-Mohamed is a successful business owner who has embarked on several entrepreneurial ventures. Currently, he owns and operates his own consultancy that specializes in project management and business strategy.

Yet, Dr. Ben-Mohamed credits an earlier career experience for inspiring him to teach in AMU’s entrepreneurship program. From 2004 to 2008, Ben-Mohamed worked as a civilian contractor for the Department of Defense (DoD). Working closely with servicemembers from every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces motivated a new career goal. Dr. Ben-Mohamed was determined to give back to these brave men and women through education.

Academic and Professional Experience Outside the Military Could Count Towards Program Requirements

AMU allows students to apply up to 15 transfer credits towards the 36-credit Entrepreneurship Master of Arts program. The University may award credit for qualifying professional and academic experience, including:

  • Previously completed graduate courses
  • Professional training and certification
  • Government training
  • Public safety training

Students may also receive academic credit for satisfactory scores on:

Resources for Servicemembers and Their Families

Some entrepreneurship students may qualify for military tuition assistance. AMU's Preferred Military Rate is available to all U.S. active-duty service members, National Guard members, Reservists, and their families, including parents, spouses, legal partners, siblings, and dependents.

NOTE: The Preferred Military Rate supersedes all university grants and special promotions and cannot be combined with other special pricing.

 

GI Bill® Benefits and AMU’s Veteran Grant

Entrepreneurship and innovation are often of interest to those with military backgrounds. Veterans may have the option to apply GI Bill® benefits toward tuition expenses for this degree program.

American Military University is also a Yellow Ribbon School. Additional financial aid is available to entrepreneurship degree-seekers through the Chapter 33 - Post-9/11 GI Bill®*  Yellow Ribbon Program.

Starting a company does not require a formal education in business. However, there are many reasons to consider pursuing a degree in entrepreneurship. Concentration tracks, for instance, allow students to tailor their studies to their unique interests. Additionally, required courses often cultivate essential skills for pursuing new business ventures and scaling operations.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs are grounded in the principles of managerial and leadership skills. MBA students generally discuss strategies best suited to those who work in large, established companies. Entrepreneurship programs, however, focus on the needs of smaller companies and those wishing to launch their own startups. Entrepreneurship students also discuss the importance of innovation for launching profitable products and services. In addition, an entrepreneurship program may integrate coursework specific to issues new business owners commonly face. 

Master of Science (MS) degrees are usually more math focused and technical in nature than Master of Arts (MA) degrees. MA programs are based primarily in liberal arts and humanities-related subjects. 

A Master of Science in Entrepreneurship will likely focus heavily on data analytics and finance. Alternatively, a Master of Arts in Entrepreneurship may take a more holistic and conceptual approach to develop students’ critical-thinking skills. Both types of programs may incorporate experiential learning to examine the link between entrepreneurship and innovation. Additionally, students pursuing either type of degree can expect to complete research projects. 

American Military University offers a Master of Arts in entrepreneurship, however, students still discuss business analytics and finance throughout the program. 

A master’s in entrepreneurship is a type of graduate degree that may be suitable for someone interested in learning how to run a successful startup. There is an undeniable relationship between entrepreneurship and innovation. Students who pursue their Master of Science or Master of Arts degrees in Entrepreneurship analyze this relationship. 

Accordingly, master’s-level entrepreneurship programs also guide students through the process of generating new ideas for prospective business ventures. Students graduating from a quality entrepreneurship program should feel prepared to launch and scale their own companies.
