This distinction confirms that our program meets the competencies established by the Council on Education for Public Health.

Moreover, the program helps students prepare for leadership roles in public health practices across military, federal, and community health settings.

Led by faculty with doctoral degrees, our MPH program emphasizes disaster management, quarantine operations, and applied learning through a supervised field experience. This professional degree also prepares graduates to take the Certified Public Health national exam. In addition, students complete the program with several FEMA-issued certificates.

A Master of Public Health (MPH) is an advanced degree that prepares graduates with the knowledge to prevent disease, promote wellness, and address public health challenges. AMU’s MPH degree trains students to collect and use data, evaluate public policies, and respond to public health emergencies.

Our MPH students gain real-world experience through a supervised practicum that connects theory to practice in diverse settings. Coursework covers the five core disciplines of public health, which include:

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental health sciences
  • Epidemiology
  • Health policy and management
  • Social and behavioral sciences

Students also discuss how public officials navigate global health crises and promote health equity.

Both degrees support health services and can pave the way to fulfilling public health careers. MPH students learn to translate public health research into actionable insights. They may analyze case studies and engage in community outreach. Assignments may also integrate simulations to prepare learners to navigate real-world emergency and disaster scenarios. Public health programs may therefore be well-suited to learners seeking roles in government agencies or nonprofits.

Conversely, students interested in laboratory or research-focused study may prefer to pursue an MS.

A public health degree program focuses on evidence-based practices for disease prevention. Students also discuss health promotion strategies.

AMU’s MPH program trains students to design and lead public health initiatives that address issues such as health disparities and environmental health and safety. Core courses also emphasize emergency preparedness, and learners gain real-world experience through a 16-week public health practicum.
